Location: Ultimo, Sydney NSW

Salary guide: $73,000 p.a. pro rata, plus statutory superannuation

Work type: Part-time (0.8 FTE), 3-year contract

The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) is the peak national body for Australian writers and illustrators. About the role

Do you want to help shape the future of Australia’s book industry by helping authors and illustrators to pursue sustainable creative careers? We’re seeking an empathetic and enthusiastic supporter of writers with book industry and publishing knowledge to join our team.

This newly created role reports to the CEO, and will be responsible for advising and guiding our author and illustrator members through the often overwhelming and opaque publishing industry. You will deliver advice through the ASA’s Member Advice Service, project manage the development of resources that are responsive to creator needs, and coordinate the regular review of our standard rates of pay for authors and illustrators.

Key duties for this member-facing role include:

  • Managing the Member Advice Service, including administering and responding to queries over the phone and via email
  • Reviewing, developing, and publishing rates of pay guidelines, and advising employers on appropriate payment practices
  • Consulting with authors, illustrators, literary organisations, and key stakeholders on industry standards
  • Project-managing the development of resources for authors and illustrators
  • Researching and reporting on industry trends to inform ASA services, advocacy, and internal initiatives

About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Professional experience in the book industry (ideally in publishing)
  • An understanding of author and illustrator creative and professional practices
  • A customer-focused mentality, with experience working directly with key stakeholders
  • A compassionate nature with patience to carefully guide and advise authors and illustrators at various points in their careers
  • Excellent written and verbal communication
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills, and the ability to multitask
  • A passion for being a supportive advocate for creative professionals and an understanding of the often daunting challenges of creative industries
  • Attention to detail
  • Professional discretion and excellent interpersonal skills
