Getting to Know You: Mirandi Riwoe

At the end of 2024 we welcomed two new Board Directors. In continuation of our Getting to Know You series, you’ll hear directly from your new representatives about why they choose to give their time to the ASA. This week we hear from Mirandi Riwoe.

Hello – my name is Mirandi Riwoe and I’m delighted to be a director on the board of the Australian Society of Authors.

I have been writing for many years and am privileged to have seven books and a number of short stories published over the past eight years. I have often judged or peer assessed prizes and fellowship grants (such as various short story competitions and for the ASA, Creative Australia and Copyright Agency), and I am very happily involved in the writing community in Brisbane. I strongly believe in being active in the industry, and often write cover quotes for novels when invited, mentor emerging authors, give workshops, and interview authors on their work at book events. A few years ago I was the fiction editor for Peril Magazine and I love attending writers’ festivals and writers’ residencies.

I am very passionate about supporting the writing community in Australia. I think the ASA’s commitment to advocating for the rights of writers and illustrators is crucial to our profession, and I am especially interested in areas such as the regulation of AI and a national cultural collection be representative of modern Australia, especially those previously marginalised. I hope to learn from experience on the board, and to share what knowledge I might have to offer.
