ASA welcomes Federal Budget provisions for Australian writers

The ASA welcomes the release of the Albanese Government’s 2025-26 Federal Budget, which includes the first tranche of money allocated for the establishment of a dedicated body for writers, Writing Australia. This represents the first time money has been earmarked for Australian writers, books, and publishing, as part of $22 million in additional funding for Creative Australia.

Alongside the expansion of the Australian lending rights schemes to include digital formats, Writing Australia was one of the key initiatives announced in the national cultural policy, Revive, to deliver upon a national vision for literature.

Due to be established in July this year, Writing Australia is set to:

  • Support writers and illustrators to create new works;
  • Invest in a network of key organisations delivering public value for Australians;
  • Develop national industry initiatives and international markets to maximise exposure and access to global markets;
  • Establish a national Poet Laureate to promote poetry and mentor up-and-coming poets;
  • Deliver the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards.

ASA CEO Lucy Hayward says, “We’re thrilled to see this much-needed investment in the work of Australian authors and illustrators, and the book sector. Revive highlighted the fact that literature has been sidelined and underfunded; Writing Australia represents a real opportunity to address key challenges such as low author income, build a thriving sector, and create a strong framework for the future.”

The ASA also welcomes $11 million of new funding to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Languages Policy Partnership, as well as the allocation of $1 million to assist the Attorney-General’s Department to review and prepare for the copyright challenges presented by AI.
