Earlier this year we shared news about the Attorney-General’s establishment of the Copyright and Artificial Intelligence Reference Group (CAIRG), which was formed to facilitate ongoing engagement with stakeholders on issues relating to copyright and AI. We are now pleased to share that the ASA has been appointed to the Steering Committee of CAIRG, which is intended to assist the Department in testing ideas and refining questions ahead of engaging with the broader group.
We are joined on the Steering Committee by 20 representatives from peak bodies across the creative industries – including the APA and Copyright Agency – along with representatives from the tech sector, and legal experts. The initial focus will be the use of copyright material as inputs for AI systems, following which the CAIRG may also consider potential copyright infringements in AI outputs, and the copyright status of AI outputs. We welcome the opportunity to be involved in the Committee and to offer the author perspective on copyright and AI matters and to propose meaningful paths forward.
