Writing historical fiction for children

Historical fiction captures the imagination of younger readers; as a genre, it has the power to enthrall, educate, and contribute to the development of empathy in children, but it can be challenging to write. There are dark periods and events in history which are impossible to sanitise, laws and attitudes which will seem dystopian to contemporary kids. How can an author open a dialogue between the past and the present, staying true to their research and historical accounts while crafting a compelling, age-appropriate read that will keep children turning the pages?

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn from one of Australia’s most celebrated children’s authors, Katrina Nannestad. Katrina’s historical novels have struck a chord with younger readers with their masterful balance of light and dark.
