A new-look industry directory

Industry opportunities are at your fingertips in the ASA’s updated Book Industry Directory, a comprehensive and invaluable online directory of Australian publishing industry organisations, opportunities, and services.

Easy-to-navigate and up-to-date, this ASA member-only digital resource has been expanded this year to include a listing for writerly Substacks to subscribe to, and a wider variety of resources for both emerging and established writers and illustrators looking for opportunities to submit their work and connect with relevant people in the book industry.

So, what can our members find in the directory? The directory is divided into four sections: the who’s who of the Australian book industry, funding your work, publicising your work, and self-publishing.

Key book industry contacts

From industry newsletters, magazines, and journals to organisations and associations such as the Copyright Agency, the Directory includes a list of all the major players. Australian literary agents and trade publishers are listed, as are details for sensitivity readers. For those looking to pitch panels and talks, or just attend to learn and network, Australian literary festivals and international book fairs are listed.

Adapting to the ever-evolving industry landscape, the directory includes listings of literary Substacks and influencers (think bloggers, bookstagrammers, and BookTok). These resources are particularly beneficial for self-published authors or creators looking to build their brand.

Funding avenues for your work

Finding out about the funding and grant opportunities available to you, as well as all the residencies, fellowships, competitions, and prizes in Australia can be time-consuming and daunting. We have taken some of the legwork out of the  process of collating this information with our directory listings.

Publicity resources

Beyond funding, writing, and publishing your work, a major step in the process of bringing a book to life is spreading the word to your audience through marketing and publicity. Our directory lists book publicists and agencies working directly with authors, book review services, and speaker agencies. Plus, if you’re interested in hosting a book launch or signing, find a link to the BookPeople Australian Bookshop Directory.

Self-publishing service providers

Considering self-publishing your work? Find details on major self-publishing service providers, custom publishers, and print distributors. And for those getting reading to finalise their manuscripts, we’ve included listings of Australian printers.

The ASA’s Book Industry Directory is updated annually to ensure listings remain current, and dates and opportunities have the most up-to-date information.
