Graphic novels: Can we grow them at home?

Graphic novels sales are soaring at present and publishers are beginning to tap into this potential, with Hardie Grant recently announcing a new graphic novel imprint.

Now a comprehensive report on graphic novel publishing has been released by the 2023-4 Beatrice Davis Editorial Fellow, Sophie Splatt. Her report Graphic novels: Can we grow them at home? is based on a three-month research trip to the United States, exploring industry practices and finding recommendations for the Australian market to capitalise on one of the fastest growing formats in publishing.

Sophie Splatt said of her fellowship and the report:

Researching graphic novels in the US was a deeply rewarding experience and undoubtedly a highlight in my career.

“Whether readers want to dip into relevant sections or read the report in its entirety, I hope my findings are both illuminating and inspire practical solutions on how to improve processes, or to publish more local content successfully into this format.”

While the report focuses on the publishing ecosystem, it offers interesting reading for graphic novelists wishing to learn more about the publication and editorial process. The report includes insights on:

  • International vs. Australian graphic novel sales figures
  • How the acquisitions and publishing process operates for graphic novels
  • The unique editorial challenges for graphic novels
  • An exploration of the creative roles within graphic novel production, such as flatters and colourists
  • Trends and recommendations for Australian publishing – can we grow graphic novels at home?
